Medical Claims Online - Inquests

Inquests

Inquests are held when a person’s cause of death is unclear or when there has been concerns in relation to their medical treatments.

Inquests are held by the Coroner. Before the Inquest a post mortem will be carried out by a Pathologist. The results will form part of the evidence at the Inquest.

Inquests can take some months to begin and can often be adjourned if issues are still outstanding or new information comes to light.

Inquests can be a distressing time for all concerned and there are specialist support services available.

An Inquest is held in order to establish how a person died; not to establish blame. They are held in public and can sometimes attract significant media attention.

The Inquest will involve the Coroner hearing evidence from the clinicians involved in the patient’s care as well as the family and any other relevant witnesses. The aim is for the Coroner to be in a position to provide a cause of death.

Our Medical Lawyers are able to assist you if you require legal representation at an Inquest.

Public Funding (Legal Aid) is available for Inquests in rare instances.
