Hip screening failing.
Research by the charity Steps has found that a staggering 57% of PCTs do not have policies in place for hip screening at birth.
Hip screening is important because it can detect hip dysplasia, a particularly debilitating condition.
Whilst a UK screening programme has been in place since 1969, Steps found that 69 out 121 PCTs did not have staff guidance on screening.
Without screening and diagnosis, children may require surgery to treat the condition.
Representatives for the Trusts involved explained that the absence on staff guidance or policies, does not mean that screening is not taking place.
